Guiyang has witnessed a strong start to the year in consumer spending, with total retail sales of consumer goods rising by 4.4 percent year-on-year in the first quarter.

This impressive performance is largely attributed to a series of strategic initiatives implemented by local authorities, including trade-in programs, promotional events, and the creation of innovative new consumption opportunities.

Trade-in programs have been a major catalyst for large-scale consumption. Guiyang has collaborated with businesses to carry out trade-in activities in communities, rural areas, and government and corporate sectors.

These efforts have focused on key categories such as automobiles, home appliances, furniture, mobile devices, and electric bicycles. To date, 2,028 enterprises have participated in these initiatives, resulting in subsidy applications totaling 728 million yuan ($100 million) and boosting sales of major commodities like automobiles to 6.24 billion yuan.

Moreover, over 100 promotional events have further invigorated consumption, generating 4.92 billion yuan in sales across sectors such as automotive and dining. The distribution of 39.08 million yuan in housing consumption vouchers has also stimulated related growth in furniture, home appliances, and home improvement sectors.

Efforts to enhance consumer experiences have led to the development of 26 new lifestyle-focused retail environments and the introduction of 760 new flagship stores. These initiatives have significantly enriched consumer offerings to meet the diverse and personalized demands of both local and external consumers.

A representative from the Guiyang bureau of commerce said that future efforts will concentrate on emerging trends such as green and digital consumption. The city plans to further optimize the distribution of consumption vouchers and expand integrated online and in-person consumption opportunities.
